Photographing People and Groups

Lundy Island (NT 40th Anniversary)

One of my favourite subjects - working closely with individuals and groups of people. Communication is to me a very important aspect of my work.

This particular photograph, taken on Lundy Island, with TV crews, journalists and members of the National Trust, was to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the N.T.

I was asked to capture the days event on behalf of the Landmark Trust for publicity photographs for the Devon Life magazine. This was a magical day for me as a photographer which gave me the oppurtunity to capture some special moments on this unique day.

My role was to photograph the invited guests from the media and also the personnel from the island and accompany them on a tour around Lundy Island.

For me this is what this type of photography is all about - it is about creative and spontaneous work with people - in a particular moment of time. This type of photography is not staged and it is down to me to be always one step ahead, anticipating my next shot!

Portraits - Working in Closeup

No Fixed AbodeThis is a True Story!

In 2008 I was on my way to Bampton in Devon on a photographic shoot, it had just stopped raining hard when up ahead I noticed a figure which caught my eye. As I got closer I realised it was a homeless man - carrying his worldly goods in shopping bags.

I stopped the car and shouted across to him - "Can you hang on a minute!" I got out of the car and said to him - "From a photographers point of view Sir - you have a beautiful face - can I take a photograph of you please?"

He replied: "Okay - One!" (which actually tickled me!)

Knowing that I wanted to take several shots, I said to him "I have my packed lunch with me - could I take more than one photograph and you can have my lunch." He agreed straight away! I took about eight shots.

Then he said "That's enough" - with a smile - I passed him all my lunch - and of he went on his way. We had both got what we wanted! Using my initiative, creativity and communication skills when working with inviduals is all about the photography I love, meeting people halfway. Reality!
