Graham Hobbs - A Short Biography![]() Hello! Welcome to my World of Photography.I remember as a child messing around with my fathers box camera after going on many walks. At first it was a toy, a novelty, but over time it grew on me ,seeing the results fascinated me, it was like magic, one click and there it was, the picture I just took at that moment in time. When I eventually got my own camera I learnt straight away films and development cost money, so I took my shots as wisely as I possibly could, which actually was a good learning curve to photograph the image how I saw it there and then.
Over the years I found myself taking my camera around wherever I went, just in case something out of the ordinary would appear, not often, but when it did it gave me such an exhilarating feeling. In my early 20s it was that time in my life that I seriously knew that I wanted to get into photography. In fact, I was also interested in art with water colours, detailed drawing and pastels, and over a short period of time I was fortunate enough to have some commissions. Although I enjoyed that medium, it was obvious to me that it was my camera that came first, and not wanting to be stuck indoors, it was the outside world that appealed to me mostly. I found myself not just capturing local landscapes and people, but travelling to various countries, one of which was Egypt in which the landscape and the culture really took hold of me. In fact it was the image of a black and white portrait which gave me 1st place in my first photographic competition.
It was in 1991 I had my first opportunity of a serious photograph of the well known actor Edward Woodward and actress Michelle Patrice opening a local fete . Which gave me so much inspiration and self belief. Since then I have captured on camera comedian Timmy Mallet, actor Todd Carty, personal portraits with actor Joss Ackland, and personal portraits with artist R. J. Lloyd. Ever since then my passion and enthusiasm continues to the present day. Living in Bideford, North Devon, known as 'The Little White Town' has some unique architecture and oozes with history and culture. I love nothing more than an early morning stroll, before anyone's around, capturing some of those magic moments often missed in the buzz of the day. During the chilly snows of April, 2009, I only had to 'slip' down the road to discover a new and amazing 'Bideford Quay', virgin white and sparkling, before pedestrians turned the streets to a messy slush. I also captured Kingsley's Statue in a different light early that morning. The magic of capturing these moments never ceases to thrill me. Stepping out of a dry morning, I discovered the streets bathed in an almost eerie mist, and took one of my most popular shots of Bideford Quay. This not only caught the peaceful solitude of the early morning mist but also the beauty of the Quay . During the unpredictable weather in the Autumn of 2006 I managed to catch a full Rainbow across The River Torridge named 'The Third Bridge' . Staying out late at night, on numerous occasions, rewarded me with a wonderful panoramic shot. It reached from "The Long Bridge" through to "The New Bridge", with some beautiful reflections of "the Town Hall" and all the other historic buildings along "The River Torridge". This large 10 foot photograph taken in 2007 which was presented to Bideford Town Mayor is now displayed in the Bideford Pannier Market's Café . Its partner taken in 2008, the 20 foot ' A-long Bideford Quay' day shot is displayed at the Café Du Parc in the Burton Art Gallery building . It was here in 2008 I had my first photographic exhibition. In 2009 I produced a 10 foot day shot of Appledore, shooting across from Instow beach. I have raised over two and a half thousand pounds for charity over the years through various auctions of my photographs. Working closely with the local community, it is here I have received most of my awards, capturing people in their natural environment. In 2009 I was asked on behalf of the Landmark Trust to photograph the days events for "Devon Life" magazine at Lundy Island, as the National Trust was celebrating their 40th anniversary . I love attending local events in Bideford and the surrounding towns . Hence my large collection of photos from the ever increasingly popular Bideford Water Festival (featuring our very own 'Britain's got Talent' Merlin in 2009) and not to forget those wonderfully colourful carnivals which are just awash with some of my favourite camera shot opportunities. Those surrounding areas of Bideford, like Appledore , Instow and Westward Ho!, Exmoor and Dartmoor, to the world heritage and unique village of Clovelly with its beautiful coastline and landscapes are abundant with the most glorious array of shots just ripe for the taking ! I have captured from early morning sunrises to glorious spectacular sunsets. Although I have travelled to many countries around the world it is here in Bideford, North Devon, that I have captured some of my favourite images and I would like to share them with you. Some of my most recent work is displayed in the "Cooper Gallery" in Cooper Street in Bideford.
